Post subject:  Cummins "LR" Parts

Greetings:
The Valley Railroad at Essex, Connecticut owns two GE 80 Ton diesel electric locomotives, one built in 1937, the other in 1947.
We are having some difficulty in finding certain engine parts which are no longer manufactured by Cummins.
Your help is solicited in finding:
Water pump, left hand rotation, Part No. BM-20734
Cylinder Liner, 7-1/4" diameter, Part No. 20896
Piston Ring Set, 7-1/4" diameter, Part No. BM-21740
Thank you in advance for your assistance!

We had an old 80-ton with Cummins LI-600 engines. I seem to recall we bought a few parts from Striegel Supply. Don't know if they still have any of that stuff - it's been over ten years since we last operated the loco.

I also recall needing a gasket for one of the engines. At the time Cummins still supplied the gaskets but required that we buy an entire engine set, which I think was over $1,000.

I was told that those big Cummins engines were also used a lot in draglines and big power shovels at coal mines. It's possible you might find someone in coal country who knows where to find parts.

I'm not quite sure how you would do it with Cummins but your Cummins distributor ( if you get along good with them) should be able to give the path to acsess all Cummins dealerships on the net & browse their parts stock. We have done that with GM dealerships for 10 years or more.........Wooly

Greetings:
Thanks for the suggestions, but Streigle has been out of business for years and Cummins has checked their dealers without success. What I am hoping to find is someone with old Cummins stock.

Steve Swanson, the new owner of Striegel Supply, would be surprised to learn of the demise of his company. He bought the business from the legendary Ed Striegel in the early 90s. He did close down the operation on Chemical Road in Baltimore and moved it to a 70,000 sq.ft. warehouse in Crystal Springs, Pennsylvania.

He also operates and office and warehouse in Mukilteo, Washington.

Striegel places classified ads in Boats and Harbors. For those not aware of it, this is a very interesting publication, on yellow newsprint, filled with ads for dredges, barges, tugs, pumps, gensets, engines and engine parts, i.e. the entire marine spectrum. I've even seen an ad for a Canadian aircraft carrier there!

Several firms besides Striegel have old Cummins (and other) engine parts. I have a subscription to Boats and Harbors, but I imagine it can be found at most marinas, as it carries a cover price of $2.00.

I might add that the Crystal Springs facility rebuilds cylinder heads; we send some of our EMD heads over there from time to time, but I'm pretty sure they rework just about all types.
