Has anyone information regarding Baldwin Cab unit 7010 supposedly stored in the Ferroclub R. de Escalada in Argentina? It reportedly is now under the ownership of a group of Americans who plan to ship it back to the USA.

There have been (somewhat reliable) rumors/reports for a couple years that this loco was acquired by none other than the obsessive Baldwin collectors at SMS Services in New Jersey. Supposedly the export/customs was the only major holdup. If this is true, exactly how SMS reckons to deal with the difference in track gauge (5' 6") is beyond me.

Narrowing the gauge shouldn't be a big deal. These units were built for light axle loading and use a smaller traction motor than a USA BLW cab (Westinghouse 561 or 563 series). It would be mostly a matter of new axles to move the wheel seats inward and adjustments to the brake rigging. I believe these also had vacuum brakes, at least originally, and that may be more of a challenge. Then of course there's the root question: Just what would you do with the thing after having sunk considerable bucks into all that work? The word "obsessive" certainly fits in well here. To each his own.

Would this engine have the basic appearance of any US Baldwin model? If so, would the likely intention be to make a replica of some sort of "lost" Baldwin like a DR-6-4-15 or simply preserve it as an export model? I haven't been able to locate any photos of this 7010 project posted on any website.

Here is a babelfish.altavista.com translation (i.e. not very good) of the photo's caption:

Surprise was the one of several ferroaficionados when seeing Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in Kilo the 5 of Gerli last weeks. It would seem to be that this locomotive, the 7010, was bought by a American fan like part of a campaign of storing of material constructed by this company in its last years of life. According to the closing presented/displayed by the ONABE the locomotive had a base of little but of 1000$ (I come to ruin myself next to another one of characteristic similars), and was bought by a scrap dealer who soon was sold the North American in 50000$. In the first weeks the unit arrived at the tail from a train from Ferrosur leaving in Factories Maldonado from White Bay other so many that finally died under the blowpipe. After one estadía in Kilo 5 took it Ferroclub to Argentine that will have it to its safekeeping until boarding towards its final destiny. To grief that its body this depredated enough has complete motor diesel engine, motor of traction and other so many accessories, anyway the locomotive goes away uses like static monument. In the images we see it, above in Gerli 1ro. of March and down already in Ferroclub in last weekend.

A loco of this type has been restored to operating condition & will pull an excursion for Trains Unlimited in October.

I know what SMS will do with it if it becomes their property. They will put it to work. Those guys love Baldwins, but they are not a museum. They move freight.

According to the Baldwin Diesel Zone, where they keep up with such things, the #7010 belongs to the Argentine Railroad Club and the unit bought by SMS is #7001.
