The UKs 'Steam Railway' magazine has 3 articles that may be of interest in Steam_Tech.

* The A1 Locomotive Trust, who are replicating a large British 'Pacific', have decided to award the contract for the boiler to Dampflokwerk Meiningen. I suspect some members may have privately known about this!

* The Hunslet Engine Co. have taken deposits for the construction 2 new 0-4-0STs. These are of the 'quarry' type and will presumably be of 2ft gauge. The customers identity has not been disclosed. Hunslet have recently been purchased by a another railway engineering company and are now located in Burton-on-Trent. www.lh-group.com

* The Cuban sugar ministry has decided to sell 55 steam locos. Except for a Henschel, all are of American origin. This has to be the 'sale of the Century' for US enthusiasts who are, of course, not allowed to buy them! Perhaps this is why the sale is being handled for the Cubans by a Spanish preservation group. My Spanish has left the building, but I could make out enough of the text, backed by the photos, to see that ARMF is some sort of rebuilder.

One locomotive had a new boiler fabricated by Babcox and Wilcox of Andalusia, which ARMF installed. Another locomotive had some cracks (fisures) in a wheel hub and/or spokes welded up, and it also looks like it got some axle box work done, as well as new tubes. What looks like a GE U-10B was overhauled; I appreciated the "before and after" photos, and the cab photo.

It may not be such a bad thing if these guys buy up some of the better Cuban steam, rebuild it and resell it to the rest of the world. It looks like they have a decent shop; they should be capable of doing some good work.

The only downside I see is the money; having the work done in Europe may be almost as expensive as having it done here. I suspect that if the Chinese were offering rebuilt Cuban steam locomotives, they would be a lot cheaper. It will be interesting to see what comes of this one-
