A lot of work recently on the tender water tank repairs. New sheet metal added every day this past month. The ends will be welded together, but rivets will be installed where they historically should be, such as in overlapping areas of the sheets and in holding the various internal supports. I noticed the auger for the stoker is in better-looking shape now than it was a year or so ago. With more tender repairs, this will be added soon, I imagine.

Sorry for the lengthy delay in getting new info on 1361 available via the web. We are in the process of enlisting the help of some new volunteers to take on the task of gathering photos and information as to the status of the project to be placed on the web. The target for return to Altoona is Fall 2005. If anyone knows of a good machinist interested in a year's work, please have them contact me at the Museum. We would like to hire at least one IMMEDIATELY.

A bit of news regarding our favorite engine. At around 10 am, on Sept 30, a truck arrived in the Steamtown yard with the driver wheels, in red primer. They've been off the property since, I believe, 2000. It's good to see them back, and any good news on this engine goes a long way. The wheels are in the shop now, alongside the track where the tender is being repaired.

Other Steamtown news for today included the appearance of the two steam locomotives in the yard early in the day. CN no. 3254 left the roundhouse at 9:15 to test the steam heat in the coaches to be used this weekend on excursions to Tobyhanna, while CP no 2317 ran the yard shuttle trains. Visitation was pretty good for a late September Thursday.

October 1 marks the transition in management of the Bookstore to Eastern National Monuments and Parks Association. The turnover in inventory took place today.

The K4 drivers that arrived in Scranton came from the Strasburg RR shop where they received work recently. Incidentally the stoker on the 1361 is an ex-C&O unit from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and has been on loan to ARMM since the mid-1980s.

The reason the drivers were at Strasburg was because they are currently rebuilding the driving boxes. All the wheel work was done previously in TN.

Well, they're working great guns on the tender, and the wheels have arrived. Other than that, same old, same old.

The photos at the website linked above are excellent, and, like Carlos Llamos C&TS photos, give a good indication of all the work that is involved in making a steam locomotive run again. Hopefully these illustrations of all the processes involved will appease the "How come it's taking so long, I wanna shoot some video" people. Also the photos may encourage novice groups to attempt a through cosmetic restoration of old 99 down in the park instead of dismantling it to lay about in pieces for the next 30 years while trying to raise funds for repairs to make it run again.
