| Post subject: | Ex New-Haven Tender Scrapped in New Bedford, MA |
This just in from a Yahoo group posting by David Santos. Reposted here as an FYI... ===== New Bedford Tender Scrapped! It was shocking to hear this morning that the ex-New Haven steam tender that resided in New Bedford Yard has been cut up. Went by there early this afternoon to see for myself to find a pile of steel pieces. As many of you know, it was supposedly was going to be saved by the City Of New Bedford as a future memorial/display at the future commuter rail station (ha!). Somehow, as only New Bedford can, this plan went astray. Scuttlebutt at the site was that the contractor working on the yard had been trying to find someone to move it out of the way of the ridiculous earth berm they are building along the east side of the yard paralleling Herman Melville Blvd. Estimated cost was around $20,000. For whatever reason, no one stepped up to the plate and the tender went under the torch Tuesday (or maybe Monday). Dave ==== One less piece of New Haven RR history (and the only modern steam engine - well at least one end of it.) -Ed Lecuyer |
