Can someone tell me what this RR is? Perhaps a bit of track in someone's back yard? It apparently now has this former Rock Island Davenport diesel. http://k0bkl.org/rock348.htm |

If you click on the link at the bottom of their page, http://www.linotypeuniversity.com/ you see information on a seminar for learning to use a linotype machine. In addition it includes the following paragraph: Big Toys for Big Boys One of the exclusive perks of attending LU-II is the chance to play with the world's biggest train set: life size scale! The Sun Dance and Southern Railroad is on the Linotype University campus, and includes an ex-Rock Island Railroad #348 diesel, mechanical, switcher locomotive and a century old, cupola end, wooden red caboose. The train is on live rail that runs through the campus and to The Working Linotype Museum. During LU II students will have a chance to serve as the engineer or conductor on the train and see what operating really big iron is all about! (By the way, track work is like collecting letterpress printing equipment: one never wants to get it done.) Tuition is free! |

That RI locomotive is aslo accompanied by a CB&Q Doodlebug and some other stuff in Doneslville, Iowa. For some reason, I remember seing that they had an internet presence that also included another doodlebug carbody for sale, as well as some transit-type walkover seats, but I'm not sure on that one. Check this link out. http://www.minermfgco.com/minerville/railroad.htm |

Can't find it in my Rand McNally. I'm guessing the trackage in use once was a siding used to deliver coal? Sounds interesting. Anyone going by there? These little Davenport switchers, incidently, didn't work out very well on the CRI&P. Most were sold, but a few stayed on a few years as shop switchers. |

This is interesting...I saw the post and I thought it was the "Sundown & Southern" mislabeled or something. Very interesting early diesel power...the drivers are very steam-like. Unfortunately, our closest tourist railroad just runs deezul critters and no steam. However, they do have an ancient Davenport side-rodder called "The Duck" that they run which is neat in its own way. Here it is in sorry shape, but running. The Empire State Railroad Museum is restoring an ex-LS&I 2-8-0 similar to Grand Canyon #18, etc but I don't know where they will run it. Somebody told me at the Catskill Mountain Railroad, where this photo was taken. There's also a trolley museum nearby in Kingston, New York which has a Whitcomb diesel. Rides are given by an old trolley converted to diesel power at Stone Mountain, Georgia. There's also a Brill railbus, but its out of service. The Trolley Museum of New York...and its tracks aren't electrified to run trolleys. Never been there, but it looks neat. Maybe if they get enough donations they can electrify...
