The Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society Philadelphia Chapter web page has an excellent photo documentation of the ongoing restoration of an E-8 diesel locomotive owned by one of their members. The photographs are excellent and show in great detail the work being performed to bring this engine back to its original condition. The attention to detail is uncanny, and it presents a rare inside view into the restoration process. It is refreshing to see the "middle" of a project instead of just the beginning and the end. I was wondering, are there other restoration projects that are on display in a similar manner?<br> TLHarper@worldnet.com |

Thanks for your kind comments. When we started the restoration we thought the internet would be the way to give wide spread opportunity to those who had an interest to follow the program. The restoration will not bring the locomotive back to it's original appearance for several reasons. FRA regulations mandate certain appliances that were not standard in the days of the standard railroad. The neeed for HEP for house power for the trailing cars requires that the electric generators which are housed where the steam generators were have access doors as well as exhaust mufflers and additional cooling fans on the roof. The passenger pilot wsas replaced by Conrail or Amtrak with the freight version and will be changed as soon was we can locate a suitable passenger pilot.<p>The locomotive was not purchased to be a static restoration but rather an operating artifact complete with the electronics that would allow it to go almost anywhere on the US rail network.Compromise is often necessary to achieve the ultimate goal which is to see a "broad striped EP-22 on the broadway"!<p>We believe that the Internet is a great venue to share the process and want to thank Steve for his help in photographing and posting the information.<br>We are gratified that so many people are sharing in the experience.<p>BL <br> v-scarpitti@worldnet.att.net |
