| Post subject: | No. 30 leaves Boulder |
Several photos on the Boulderrails website of former Colorado & Southern 2-8-0 No. 74 (originally No. 30 of the Denver, Boulder & Western), being trucked to Strasburg (Colorado, not Pennsylvania) for evaluation and possible repair to running order. http://www.boulderrail.org/ Much debate about its condition and power on various discussion groups, but it is in fact the heaviest extant C&S narrow gauge engine. It last worked on the Rio Grande Southern, being purchased by the RGS in 1948, where crews reportedly did not like running it very much. The 74 and sisters 75 and 76 (similar, but with piston valves) were primarily used on the South Park line of the C&S, between Denver and Leadville. The 74, having come originally from Boulder, went on display there in 1953 and the other two went to Peru, (where one reportedly fell into a canyon) and apparently no longer exist. The 74 was heavily rebuilt at the joint CB&Q/C&S shops in Denver in 1926 (last I knew, the building still housed a grocery warehouse along I-25). |

Engine No. 30/74 was built as No. 30 of the Colorado & North Western, which was later reorganized as the Denver, Boulder & Western. |
