These pledges will go directly towards restoration of the historic Flying Yankee passenger train. The first of the two recent gifts, a $2,000 grant from the Amherst Railway Society in Amherst, MA, has been earmarked for continued restoration of the Flying Yankee’s extremely rare Winton 201A diesel engine. A very rare and unique engine, the Winton 201A is an inline 8-cylinder, 2-stroke diesel power plant and when built, incorporated the advantages of relatively low weight per horsepower, solid unit injection, high compression, and full horsepower at a relatively low engine speed. Originally developed in the 1930’s by a division of General Motors, the Electro-Motive Corporation, of LaGrange, Illinois, the engine developed nearly 600 horsepower. The Winton 201A also allowed the 3-car, stainless steel streamliner to run at consistent speeds of 90-100 mph. The increased speeds helped the Flying Yankee to reduce one-way travel time between Boston’s North Station and Bangor, Maine, a 250 mile one-way trip, by over 65 minutes – a feat unparalleled by other trains at that time. “The Flying Yankee introduced New England to the concept of high-speed, streamlined diesel powered passenger trains in the mid 1930’s†|
