The first steam locomotive I ever climbed aboard was C&S narrow gauge No. 60, by this gift shop at Idaho Springs, Colorado. I was about six at the time, but fascinated. It had been on display just over 10 years there, since the line was abandoned in 1941. At that time, the Idaho Springs depot was still in place downtown (it reportedly still exists elsewhere now). Today, it is actually being considered for possible restoration by the Colorado Historical Society for use on the Georgetown Loop. http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?o ... C+S_60.jpg |

Shown here in its original display position at Central City, Colorado. Moved several times since, it steamed briefly here again in the 1980s. In actual revenue service, it is somewhat doubtful that it ever came to Central City, as 2-6-0s were preferred there due to tight trackage. Donated in 1941, it was trucked up from Blackhawk, as the Central City spur had been removed about a decade earlier. http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?o ... C+S_71.jpg |
