Trying to view some old topographic maps on this site:

http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/Bennington.htm

My computer usually automatically reduces images to fit the whole thing on the monitor screen, which is usually good, but not in this case, as details on the map become unreadable.

I get the large image for about a second, which then reduces to fit the whole map on my screen. Can someone tell me how to temporarily stop my computer from reducing the images? Thanks.

Bob, if you're using Internet Explorer, while looking at the desired page try pressing the F11 key on your keyboard. This will increase the size slightly. To return to normal simply press F11 once again.

You can also "right-click" with your cursor pointer on the topo map and click on "save picture as." Your computer should automatically choose to save the image as a jpeg, you then have the option to choose where in your computer you want to save it. Choose where you want to save it to -then hit "save." (remember where you saved the image in your computer)

Go to the file where you saved the picture of the map and call up the image. Your picture viewing software should let you make the topo map as big as you like.

Hope this helps.

Bob

In IE 6 there is a toggle window appears at the bottom right of the picture. Click on it and it will change it back to the size you want.
Otherwise save it and then view it with another program.

You can also turn off the resizing feature of IE by going into "Tools" and then "Internet Options," and selecting "Advanced" on the right side of the tabs along the top. Then scroll down to "Multimedia" Then uncheck the "Automatic resizing of images" box by right clicking on it. For looking at large images I perfer it to be unchecked, it makes it easier for me.

A minor correction to the link that you posted...

While the UNH site still exists, the offical home for the Historic USGS map collection has moved to:
http://historical.maptech.com

This was done so that the collection could be expanded beyond New England and New York. It now encompasses MD, PA, NJ, OH, DE, and WV. There have also been some minor updates/corrections posted on the current site that have not (to my knowledge) been made on the UNH site.

We're always looking for more maps/areas to add to the collection, as well as more publicity for the site - if anyone is interested.
