Found this on the Altamont Press. Sounds like they want to move the UP 2-8-2 and caboose out of the park there: Pocatello, Idaho "Old Town" group considers depot museum The moment she ventured into Old Town as a new Pocatello resident two years ago and saw the old Union Pacific depot, Linda Deck thought "museum." It was a bonus when she discovered the interior resembled the Dinosaur Hall at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. During an Old Town Pocatello board meeting Thursday night at the Continental Bistro, Deck and three other downtown business officers were introduced as new board members. Deck's vision is among several developments which have Old Town board members excited about the future. For Deck, director of the Idaho Museum of Natural History, restoring the depot for use as a new headquarters for the museum would be a major draw for Old Town, while expanding space for exhibits and preserving a historic building. Deck's museum is now located on the Idaho State University campus. Environmental studies are under way to determine if converting the depot, part of which is still used for Union Pacific office space, would be feasible. Deck plans to form a committee with railroad representatives, Old Town merchants and any other interested parties. Old Town members also have plans to renovate Union Pacific's signal shop for small shows and a new location for the farmers' market. Old Town Design Committee Chairman David Sandquist said the shop could have a clock tower, and an artist's rendition of what the exterior would look like has been prepared to generate excitement about the proposal. Sandquist would like trains from Ross Park to be moved to the restored railroad buildings, and he believes the projects would preserve Pocatello's past as a railroad town. Signs currently in place which direct people downtown are labeled "city center." Those signs are scheduled to be replaced with "Historic Old Town" signs. Sandquist said "Historic Old Town" signs will also be added to Interstate 15 and entrances to the city. A ribbon cutting was hosted Thursday night for another draw to Old Town, the new Pocatello High School gymnasium. "It's a beautiful structure. It's a reason for people to come downtown," Sandquist said. - John O'Connell, The Idaho State Journal, courtesy Larry W. Grant |
