Just curious if anyone has been to Carleton Place, Ontario in recent years? (Southwest of Ottawa.) There was a CPR stone roundhouse w/attatched machine shop there, inside a wye, in relatively good condition into the 1990s. Built in 1897, it was closed by the railroad in the 1930s, and sold soon after to a wool growers association, which used it to store wool. They applied a metal roof and covered the stall doors with corrugated metal, also erecting a metal quonset hut on the turntable pit.

The building was studied in detail in the "Extant Enginehouses in Canada: A Report Presented To The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, February 1992", by David Smyth, Staff Historian. This Xerox report is nearly 600 pages long, and had something on all known rroundhouses in Canada at the time, some of which have since been destroyed.

It also received coverage in Edward Forbes Bush's "Enginehouses and Turntables on Canadian Railways", which was a commercially produced hardcover book.

The Canada Parks report noted the wool growers association was considering a move elsewhere at that time. What is the status of the roundhouse today? Anyone have photos?

Two other former roundhouses in the area:Former, Bay of Quinte Railway, Tweed, Ontario, located on abandoned right-of-way, just to the south of the former Canadian Pacific Railway right-of-way.In the west side of the village, about 1000 yards west of former Canadian Pacific Railway Station. Easy to see and photograph. and Former, Canadian Northern Railway, Trenton, in the south end of the city, just off Highway 33. Now used by a hardware store for storage. Tracks still visable in the bushes on the east side. Has not been altered much, easy to photograph.
