This unusual Signal was resting behind the White river Jct. station when I was there. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on its origins. Where it was originally located in relation to the station, the story of its discovery, etc. Apparently it was lost for several years.

This ball signal controlled the diamond formed by the crossing of the line from Westboro over the line up the River to Wells River. Phil Hastings has a well known shot of this signal with a B&M P2 taken in the late 40s early 50s. It was on the east side of the station. The mangled remains of the signal were discovered by members of the NRHS White River Junction chapter over a bank near the river this spring. The pulleys and balls were not found.

That looks like the "can" part of the signal, into which the balls or lanterns disappeared from view to display the correct indication to trains. Various books and magazines have photos of it in use - Hastings, Shaughnessy, etc. B&M Historical Society would be a good place to start.
