I recently saw an interesting boxcar in Austin, Texas on a southbound freight at Sneed siding. The boxcar had Western Pacific reporting marks but with a Union Pacific Shield with an "Overland Route" Banner across the shield. The Boxcar looked fairly clean. Does anyone know when they painted it this way and why?
Union Pacific has been using the reporting marks of railroads it has merged since at least the UP_MP_WP merger. I've seen CNW and MP examples, but no SP or DRGW yet. The use of the Overland shield is interesting, though, most of what I've seen (generally covered hoppers and some boxcars) have the basic UP shield.
I was recently told by an individual at the Austin Train show that UP and others will occasionally put thier older seldom used emblems like the UP Shield w/ the Overland Route Banner on cars in order to protect the copyright on the emblem.
