Post subject:  Alamanor last run

It appears California's Almanor RR may be making its last run tomorrow, 10/8/2004. This serves the Collins Pine mill in Chester, California, and the RR belongs to the lumber company. They have operated a GE 70-tonner since the 1950s, but previously had a Heisler that trailed an ancient tender from a 4-4-0. Though I've never done much research, the line apparently once belonged to the Red River Lumber Co. and was at least partly electrified. It connects with the former Western Pacific Bieber line (now operated by BNSF) a few miles east of Chester. My cousin, who lives nearby, says there was talk of a tourist train a while back, but it was dropped due to insurance costs. Hopefully, a motorcar or similar operation might keep the rails down.
