What is the origin of the term Johnson Bar for the cut-off/reverse lever on a steam locomotive?

I always assumed that it was named after Jack Johnson, heavyweight boxing champion of the world in the early years of the twentieth century. His name was synonymous with great strength. Since it took great strength for the engineer to pull up the Stevenson valve gear with the bar, it got that nickname.
