Haymarket in the UK, 1964, with some impressive apartment buildings overlooking the railway yard. Is that an A3 or one of the newer A1s? Bet their windows required frequent cleaning.

What you see is 60042, a Gresley A3, rebuilt with a Kylchap double chimney and "German" smoke deflectors. Visible in the background is a Peppercorn pacific but as I can't find a link that gives locomotive names I can't work out whether it's an A1 or A2. Visible on the left is the front end of a B1 4-6-0.

The loco in the background is an A1. From the nameplate it appears to be 60127 "Wilson Worsdell". The B1 on the left is 61244 "Strang Steel".

I think the location is wrong. It looks more like St. Margarets (the other ex LNER Edinburgh shed which was hemmed in by tenements. Haymarket was (is) on top on an embankment and not overlooked by other buildings.

Thanks for that - all I could think of for the A1 was "William Whitelaw" which, even I know, was an A4! I shall have get some books about LNER loco's which constitute a large gap in my knowledge...
