Beautiful! What about the interior? Does it retain it's 10-6 configuration? Also, I know that railroads that had Budd bead blasted the stainless on cars that were meant to be painted from the factory, what kind, if any body prep did you undertake to get the paint to adhere to the stainless.

Post subject:  What did you do with the interior?

Hello,

What is the current interior configuration of this car?

Thanks!

Bennett And Eric, Congratulations to you both and to your talented crew!! What a magnificient job-certainly encouraging to see that at least there's one outfit still going that knows how to do it right!!!
Hope the interior is the equal of the exterior!!!

Painted Budd cars were not bead blasted from the factory. Paint will stick quite well to natural stainless steel as long as a proper primer is used.

The fluting has been replaced with flat siding. As I recall, PRR had two Budd 10-6 cars with flat stainless steel*, as well as the twin-unit diners and the Inn 21 Rmt cars that became coaches. These have noticable joints between the panels which I don't see in the picture. Did Juniata improve on Budd here?

BTW is the Cypress Grove on Amtk 40 at Altoona?

* one was donated to RRMPA by B. Levin.

PRR had two slab sided 10/6's "SCIOTA RAPIDS" and "STERGEON RAPIDS" that were built for run through service with the the N&W. Both cars survived the PC merger to become "TORONTO ISLANDS" and "TORONTO HARBOR". STERGEON RAPIDS wound up on the C&NW for company office car train conversion, but it was destroyed in a fire before conversion took place. Juniata Terminal Company aquired SCIOTA RAPIDS from Amtrak in the early 90's as part of a package of other equipment. The car was stored at Fairhill until evaluation determined it was beyond economic repair. It was then donated to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania on account of it's significance as a product of Pennsylvania as well as being and example of postwar sleeping car technology.

Juniata Terminal developed a method of sheathing Budd equipment during construction of the parlor car WARRIOR RIDGE that makes use of modern material science as well as minimal mechanical fastening. The smooth sided Budd constructed cars used a locking section to affix the side panel. The Juniata developed method is proprietary.

The Jeff Lubchansky photo is at Altoona.

"Modern material science as well as minimal mechanical fastening" sounts like code talk for Bondo to me! If you get in touch with Doyle McCormack in Portland he can tell you how to get a discount on the 50 gallon drums he's using on his NKP PA and other projects!

All kidding aside, that's one beautiful car to go along with your beautiful e-units. I hope to see them in person one day.

Ummm, guys?

There's a bunch of Southern Pacific fans out at the Juniata Terminal gates with pitchforks and torches.........

To heck wi' 'em. Seriously, when can we get a sleeper ticket on the Pennsylvanian?

The car remains a 10-6. Work needs to be completed on the interior to bring it up to "snuff".

Now for all of you who want to see something interesting it will be on the Harrisburg NRHS trip this weekend (HGB-PHL-PERRYVILLE-COLUMBIA-ROCKVILLE-HBG.

The All Tuscan equipment move to 30th Street is Friday afternoon. The shop gates will be closed so get your photos on the fly!

5711.5809.LJR,WR, PA.

The three car set will move to PGH on 11/6 on 41 and return to PHL on 11/8 on 40.

We would be interested in acquiring additional BUDD cars from the same ESPEE order (Sunset Limited), to match the Warrior Ridge and the Little Juniata Rapids!

This might be a total shot in the dark, but when I was at the Nevada State RR Museum in Boulder, they had an assortment of gutted SP passenger cars that were obtained in the Heber Creeper buyout a few years ago. The maintenance worker I spoke with, Dave, was very helpful. He mentioned that he was pretty confident that the items were surplus to the group at this point in time.
Hopefully someone here has a better clue as to what equipment is there and whether or not it fits your criteria. I was there to see the Shay and the Eureka & Palisades/Uintah #12 engine.
The contact phone number I have for them is 702-486-5933. I think Greg Corbin is the site manager.

Post subject:  Re: Ex-SP Heber Creeper cars

The Heber Creeper never had any lightweight ex-SP cars. The only two lightweight cars that might have gone to Nevada from Utah in the aforementioned buyout were an ex-UP 4000 series dining car and ex-UP dorm lounge #6100. These were both smooth-sided ACF or PS cars. The diner was used on the short-lived Heber Creeper dinner train in the late 80's. The dorm lounge was never in Heber and was in horrible condition when it left Utah, having sat out near the SLC airport unsecured for many years where it suffered greatly at the hands of vandals. In about 1987, UP required the then-owners to paint over the UP colors. A new 'door' (hole) was also cut in the side of the lounge area of the car about that the time to facilitate its use as a storage car. Not sure how it ended up in Nevada, but it shows up on NSRM's roster now.
