Post subject:  B&O Museum Reopening November 13

The reopening of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum is now less than two weeks away. I was in the roundhouse for a volunteer orientation meeting on Friday night, and what they have accomplished is nothing short of spectacular.

The roundhouse colors were carefully researched, and it is now painted in the original colors. The lower end of the walls are black, the upper part of the walls are white, and the roof timbers are unpainted. The overall effect is stunning. The building itself is a treaure to say nothing of its contents. The insurance company wanted to knock the roundhouse down, and rebuild a new museum building, but fortunately that did not happen.

For those of you who have been there in the past, forget everything you remember. The only two pieces that are on the same track as before are Shay #1, and CNJ 4-4-2 Camelback #592. Everything else has been moved. The pieces that were most heavily damaged are still inside the roundhouse, but are surrounded by glass to protect the public from being hurt, and to keep pieces from walking off. The pieces behind glass include 0-8-0 "Memnon," 4-6-0 "Thatcher Perkins" 4-6-0 "Ross Winans," 2-6-0 "J.C. Davis, and Civil War era baggage care #10. The only piece completely destroyed was Civil War coach #20.

There is good news and bad news about the restoration of the rolling stock. The insurance money did not cover the damage. Rather than fix just a few pieces and hope for the best, the museum has used the money to build a brand new restoration facility that will enable them to restore the entire collection over a period of years, and keep things in tip-top shape afterward.

I'll post more comments after the museum reopens. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me her or else off list.
