Former Cumberland Valley; remaining part is ca. 1919 extended stalls built to house the H-6 Consols. Looks like 4 stalls are still standing, used to house a very popular farmer's market called Jim's Country Market. http://www.publicopiniononline.com/news/stories/20041012/localnews/1401154.html |

In addition to the portion of the roundhouse the backshop building also survives. It was built by the Cumberland Valley just before the PRR took over the railroad and the repair work was soon moved to Altoona. The PRR used the shop as a frog and switch repair facility until about 1960 if I remember correctly. The first welded rail used by the PRR was also fabricated there. I think the building is now owned by Knouse Foods. The last time I was in the backshop in 1979 the 200 ton Niles overhead crane was still there hanging over tons of applesause. John Bohon |

Ahhh, my family's first hometown after they came over from Germany in 1744. Yes, a good number were Cumberland Valley employees, and yes, they were there when the rebs burned the town. I used to go back to see a Great Aunt until she passed away. Her father was a PRR man, as were so many of my forefathers. The roundhouse and backshop remnants still stand, as does the King Street PRR depot along the once-famous stretch of street running. Ironically, the newer depot, built on the elevated realignment, is gone. At least one PRR freight house survives. East of town, my Aunt had a place in Woodstock that abutted the PRR branch there. Ont he property was Woodstock depot, though by the time I got there, only the floor was left. It was a tiny shanty-like structure that apparently was moved, sans floor, to a nearby farm. I have not gone looking for it. There's B&B down the road that occupies a house built for a president of the CVRR, complete with a siding for his private car. There's also a restored PRR cabin on Route 30 along with a replica depot or two. Rob |
