Does anyone know of a source for reflectors to fit locomotive headlights? I don't have a specific diameter and I'm looking for both a Pyle steam locomotive headlight as well as Pyle diesel headlight.

Thanks,

Richard

Hey would any of these people have a reflector for a Porter oil headlight. I am a volunteer at the New Jersey Museum of Transportation and we are restoring a 1914 Porter 2-6-0. We had a Porter oil headlight donated to us. It has a beautiful brass burner in it but no reflector.

Stainless steel salad bowls from Wal Mart, et al, make a fine low budget alternative to the genuine unobtainable original.

Your work sounds like very good news indeed for the preservation community. Am I reading between the lines in that the mold might be able to be adapted to produce more than one diameter? If not, what size are you planning to have made? Diameter and the depth of the bowl?

Second question - does several hundred dollars each mean something like $300 or more like $800? (Either number is probably within the fair value range but one might be a little deeper than my pockets right now for a pair of 'em.)

You've gotten some good responses. I wonder if the amateur astronomical community might be a resource. 20-30 years ago, most amateur astronomers ground their own mirrors (for their telescopes). While tedious and labor intensive, it wasn't difficult to grind the mirror. There were also companies that you could then ship your finished mirror to for silvering. I expect books on the subject are still available from public (and personal) libraries. I recall that there were several suppliers of mirror blanks (in a variety of sizes and even prefigured) that advertised in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines.

Parabolic reflector stage lights are mass produced - the entire instrument including a nice halogen lamp should cost less than $500. Times Square, Altman, Century, Berkey are makes that come to mind. Generic name "Scoop".
