| Post subject: | Favorite steam locomotive. |
Lets see. Some one has proble asked this before but I would like to know what steam engines people like the most. It dosent have to be a locomotive that survives today and it can be any gauge (except live steam stuff). List the gauge, wheel arrangment, builder, year built and railroad it ran for. Example - Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad #24. 2ft gauge, 2-6-2, built by Baldwin in 1919. scraped 1936 :(. You can also list more then one locomotive. My favorites are: -SR&RL # 24 as listed above. -Wiscasset Waterville & Farmington Railway #7. 2ft gauge, 2-4-4, built by Baldwin in 1907. Scraped 1937. -Surry Sussex & Southampton Railroad #26. 3ft gauge, 2-6-2, built by Baldwin in 1920. presevered at NJMT. -Pennsy Pre war 4-6-2 K4s, 4-4-2 E6s, and 4-8-2 M1as. WW2 era MacArthur 2-8-2 36", 1000mm, and 42" gauge. Nearly 800 built by Alco, Baldwin, Davenport and Vulcan. Operated on various railroads around the world. Of the eleven 36" gauge variants that operated on the WP&YR four still survive. Two are operating today, No 190 is at Tweetsie, No 192 at Pigeon Forge TN. Nos 195 and 196 are at Skagway AK. No. 221, one of the 42" vairiants was recently restored to operation at Queensland OZ. At least one meter gauge variant is restored and operating at the NorthWestern Frontier Railway in India and another is at the New Dheli railway museum. One of the most succesful narrow gauge designs ever built. |

Sorry I don't have all the details to hand, but here is the best I could come up with. Standard gauge unless otherwise noted. UK: London North Eastern Railway A4 pacifcs, any configuration Great Western Railway 2-6-2 pannier tanks and 4-6-0s Great Northern Railway large-boilered atlantics Isle of Man Beyer-Peacock 2-4-0 tanks. (36" gauge) Great Eastern Railway Claud Hamtion type 4-4-0s. Ffestiniog Railway-Double and single Farlie engines In the states: D&RGW 2-8-2s (36" gauge) SP 4449 GS-4 4-8-4 Any DL&W steam, in particular streamlined/non-streamlined pacifics, and the beautiful Hudsons. Most Atlantics, in particular the PRR E6s Most 19th century steam that was lavishly painted, 4-4-0s, 2-6-0s etc CPR Royal Hudsons Joshua |

Has to be the stuttering 4-10-2 Southern Pacifics used by the SP. Not very speedy, not very elegant, but functional and powerful. If only 5021 had been allowed to run with the Freedom Train we might still have one operating. Someday .... |

Union Pacific 844 Union Pacific 3985 All Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson's and Selkirk's. Nickel Plate Berkshires Baltimore & Ohio 5300 (4-6-2 "President Washington") Southern 4501 Southern 1401 Those I wish had survived: A Chicago Burlington & Quincy 2-10-4 A Baltimore & Ohio 4-8-2 and 2-8-8-4. One of their 2-10-2's would have been nice as well. |

Prr M1b,K4,L1,I1s, NKP Berk,C&O Greenbrier,Niagara,Gran Trunk 6325, first big steam I saw hot,Lionel urbine(postwar) my Uncles under the Christmas tree, Lionel 675, first big steam I bought for my self,.....be easier to say all steam |

UK: GWR 4-6-0's 'Castles,Kings,Halls,etc. are all good BR Britania Class 7MT 4-6-2's BR 9F class 2-10-0's US: B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4's RDG T-1 4-8-4's PRR K-4 4-6-2's RDG G-1sa 4-6-2's RF&P (General,Statesmen,Governor Classes)4-8-4's WM K-2 4-6-2's Africa: SA Railways Beyer-Garrett's in various froms List is not in any order of preferance, nor is it complete. |

Even though most engineers hated them, I rather like the Pennsy T1. Lousy machine, but MAN did it look sexy! Beyond that my favorites are the "big" 3' gauge Crown 4-4-0s, particularly the two European engines at Busch Williamsburg. One of these days I hope to see H&B #44 under steam, and fire her. At that point she'll become my fav. :o) |

I'd have to say I'm a push-over for anything designed or operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad. My particular sorrow is that one example of each of "the beautiful failures" no longer exist. A Q2 or T1 would make an exceptional excursion locomotive. Aside from the PRR, the NYC Hudson would be way up there, as well as most Camelback designs. I just love steam! |

Those that still exist: GTW 4-8-4 U-3-b's (#6300's) GTW 4-8-2' s (#6037 - #6041) N&W 4-8-4 J's (#600's - yes, I'm a child of NS steam years) CN 4-8-2 "Bullet Nose Betty's (#6060's - didn't hurt to have one in Sarnia as a kid growing up) PM 2-8-4 N's (#1200's) CN 2-6-0's (#80's & 90's) LS&I #2-8-0's (#32-#36: hey, I'm partial caused I've worked on them, and cause they were my first steam exposure in the Marquette & Huron Mountain years) SP GS's (come on, I grew up on them like I grew up on NS steam) Those that don't: GTW 4-8-4's U-4-b's (#6400's) GTW 4-6-2's K-4-a's (those without all weather cab's, like #5629 SNIF) PM 4-6-2's (#700's, with polished cyclinder heads and stars) D&M 4-6-0's (#130's -- just classic engines period.) C&NW, GTW, NYC, Santa Fe and Milwaukee Road Streamlined Steam All time favorites: GTW #5030 class 4-6-2's, specifically #5038 and #5043, although I'll take class survivor #5030. These two engines, along with #4070 (2-8-2) closed out steam operation on the Caseville Branch/ Cass City Sub/ "Polly-Ann" of the GTW. Below is #5038 and the last train over the Detroit & Huron (Bad Axe branch) of the Cass City Sub, on April 30, 1951, and the crew that was on it. Some of my favorite shots in my collection. Engines that survived C&O 2-6-6-6 SP Cab Forward SP 5021 4-10-2 CP 2-10-4 5935 Selkirk UP 844 4-8-4 Just about every geared engine, love Cass! CN Northerns 6167, 6213, 6218 etc Santa Fe 2-10-4 Engines I wish were still around New York Central hudsons Santa Fe Blue Goose 4-6-4 New York Central 6000 series 4-8-4 TH&B Berkshires |

Of engines still around, 1218, 611, 4501, 630, 750, 1522, ACL 1504, 475, 578, any 4-4-0's. (Notice a little N&W/Southern prejudice here?) Engines I wish were saved, N&W Y-4, S1a, K1, and K2. Southern Ms1, Ts1, F-1 4-6-0, F-8 4-6-0. Anything USRA, and more 19th century stuff, 1850's to 1880's. |
