Some time ago, I mentioned I thought I had seen a photo of a B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4, still extant in 1961. At least a couple of persons said I was crazy, and that they were all scrapped by then. I ran across the photo again. Scroll down on the page. http://home.att.net/~Berliner-Ultrasoni ... l#AB&Fends |

As one of the many who think the EM-1 is best looking articulated ever built I can only say this photo makes me sick. That locomotive should be in the B&O Museum. If the photo date is really 1961, and I have no reason to think it is not, that would make two engines that should be at B&O that got away about the same time. The other was WM 204 which was used in thaw service in Baltimore and scrapped about the time this EM-1 would have been. Talk about the ones that got away. Oh for what could have been. John Bohon |

It appears that 4-8-2's 704 and 726 were at Butler, PA in 1961 also. Was Butler, PA a staging area for B&O locos going to scrap? Looks like missed opportunities for the B&O museum. -Jim Herron |

There is a widely known story that the last of the EM-1 locos was being held for the B&O Museum, and was even listed in its brochure as a future exhibit, when a supervisor at the storage location sent it for scrap without knowing about the hold. As the story goes the guy was fired but it was too late to recover the loco. Does anyone know the details? Location? Date? No names please. |

This is even worse. Not just an EM-1 but two of the beautiful mountains. If not the museum surely some cities would have liked to have had one of these engines in their park. John Bohon |
