I am pleased to report that for the first time since the 1950's, the Rogers 1913 0-4-0T GOAT has operated under its own steam at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum in Savannah. She was fired on LP gas using 4 small burners from oyster roasters and shrimp kettles which was sufficient to raise 35 PSI. Despite the low pressure, she ran on and off the turntable several times and the injectors and both air pumps worked well.
We plan to get a couple more oyster burners and fire her for the next test on November 2 which will coincide with a major event at the museum which includes the Post Office train the following weekend and unvieling to the public our newly painted Melbourne Tramways W5 car in its River Street livery of maroon and cream.
Ya'll come on by if you are in the neighborhood.......
Dave
I would suspect that the Oyster burner was used as the propane wouldn't work in the standard burner. Also for a first time fire up natural gas or propane is nice as the firebox will not have any soot. Makes for easy inspection. First time the 3751 was fired it was on natural gas and with ceramic furnace burners. After the boiler was cooled the firebox was perfect, not a spot of soot anywhere. Makes it nice to crawl around without getting dirty. One question though. Were there oysters in the fiebox? Someone pass a plate of the roasted oysters please.
Next cooking event now on the calendar is Blues and BBQ come spring. Will try to post notices of these things before they happen in case anybody wants to attend. Had Muddy Waters' son playing in the roundhouse this year. Just missed Leon Redbone who was booked for an outdoor venus and rained out. We have offered that promoted our space if he will bring Leon back.
Dave
Thanks Erik - fresh eyes will surely have a better perspective than those of us in the trenches down there all the time.
Of course, Erik was on his honeymoon so he may have been distracted.
Dave
