Ed was a great person, one with whom I worked at Bloomsburg while attending college there from 1965-1969. I also worked with him at Dushore and Topton after the Magee dream was washed away by the 1972 Agnes flood. He taught me a great deal, not just about restoration, but about life in general. Ed came from a long line of railroaders. His father, Harry Blossom, was a member of the New York Central engineering team that designed the 1941 "Empire State Express" with Henry Dreyfuss, and his grandfather and namesake, Edward H. Blossom, was president and general manager of the Hardwick & Woodbury RR in Vermont. One of Ed's prize possessions was a Lima builder's photo of the H&W Shay "Edward H. Blossom." Even in the dark days toward the end of his productive life, when he was waiting for something to happen in Scranton, he worked in his shop at Topton. He was always the optimist, looking for the best in people. Someday, when Lehigh Valley Transit "Liberty Bell Limited" car 801, which I helped him save in 1966, is restored and operating, he will receive the recognition he so richly deserved for saving that beautiful Jewett interurban. It will be a fitting memorial to a life devoted to preservation and restoration. Rest in peace, dear friend. |
