I was in Reno, Nevada a while back and drove by these buildings. I knew of the depot, but had no idea the other building had once been the enginehouse of the Nevada-California-Oregon narrow gauge line. The NCO 4-6-0s ended up on the Southern Pacific narrow gauge line to the south and 4-6-0 No. 8 is displayed nearby at Sparks, Nevada. http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/travel/nevada/nco.htm |

The north end of the building is much more recognizable as the old engine house/machine shop. It has a large arch-top opening through which the engines once entered the building. There is a photo in David Myrick's Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California, Vol. I that shows the northern end of the building when the railroad still occupied it. |

Another one of those "If I won the lottery scenarios". Buy the depot and the enginehouse. Restore both. See if Sparks would kindly let their engine come live there in NCO image. Have some restored NCO cars in a small yard of NG and some WP stuff on the standard gauge tracks. Wave at the modern UP stuff as they roll through. Be really nice.... |
