Having recently purchased a pair of tool holders and six cutting tools on eBay, I am asking for any tricks in using same, precautions to take and personal experience with the tools. The tool holders are designed to replace the brakehead on Diesel trucks, then the tools cut down high flanges and the false flange on worn wheels while moving the unit a short distance under its own power. Standard Wheel Tool Products Company shows as being the successor to C&G Tool & Manufacturing Company. The phone number on the instructions has been disconnected and a Google search found nothing. Is this a discontinued product? Any advice will be appreciated. Alex Huff |

Drop your brake presssure, cut the truck out, walk next to the locomotive, and cut the brake in while moving very slow. You also need wood blocks to keep the trueing shoe straight. I've done this many times and done right it works great. You also have to have a packing hook to pull chips. gloves and safety glasses. I know where to buy parts and bits. We found that the carbide flange cutters would often chip on their cutting edges when first applied to the flange, leaving a bad, irregular surface. After breaking a lot of them, we found it best to just let the damaged cutter dig away for a couple of wheel revolutions until the work hardened skin of the metal had been removed. Subsequent cutters would then leave a much better surface, as the underlying metal was somewhat softer and easier to cut. |
