Are the retired LIRR coaches the next step in tourist operations, as the EL MU cars and CNJ coaches were when they were retired from service? Are the LIRR coahes a step up from the others and would we see a replacement of the EL and CNJ cars?
Well, Joe, it depends on your specific needs. The LIRR cars aren't what you want to ride on at Strasburg or CATS being of 1960's vintage. You don't want to be on them for a long trip either - they are commuter cars with lots of seats per square foot. The windows are small compared to some other cars but can be enlarged.
For a short run startup operation not requiring an antique look, they may work well. Costs to get them roadworthy are minimal and many have working toilets and HVAC systems inplace. Again, it depends on your specific purpose and design concept.
There are some other nice cars out there so shopping isn't a bad idea if you want one or two cars, but to build a train of matching equipment there aren't many sources of cars in bulk.
Dave
