Post subject:  journal pads
Does anyone know where to get journal pads for the wheel bearings for a 1910 vintage coach? We have one, but lost the name of the supplier. It is cotton, soaked in oil, about 9" by 5". We need 5 coach sets (8 each).<br>We are in Winnipeg canada, and run an 1882 4-4-0 american Standard locomotive.<br>Thankyou<br>keith Bradley<br>Trainee Fireman<br>

If all else fails you can just use cotton or wool waste as was traditionally used. There are some skills needed to properly pack the waste so the fibers are turned in, but this is not difficult to learn from historic information. Street Railway Associates in Dallas has recently offered wool yarn for journal packings the Old Reliable way. I used cotton mop heads on GOAT. <p>Dave<br>

Yes, we have secured a flock of virgin sheep in the Argentinian Andes from which we harvest bulk quanities of natural, undyed, unpreserved wool suitable for turtle-neck sweaters or packing journal boxes. We sell individual skeins and packing tools.<p>You have to be careful with alternate sources for waste, because a lot of them have oil-resisting chemicals applied so they resist dirt and stains better. Those same chemicals adversely affect the wicking ability of the waste and don't deliver sufficient oil to the bearing surface.<p>Andy Nold<br>Street Railway Associates<br>tnold@bigfoot.com<br>
