Just a question on what some of the master maniacs on line use for hub liners. The type of engine I would be asking about would be low drivered logging or shortline type loco's. Low speed types.

I have seen square washers used on Sumpter Choctaw mike at GB museum. That may be an old repair from long ago. Have also heard of using bronze built up on side of driving boxes. I can't remember the name of the material, but it is a high strength fibre/plastic type of material used as thrust washers in industrial applications used as well.

What works best for you? I know there are some sharp mechanics out there that might have a different material that I haven't heard of yet.

Traditional approach used by D&SNGRR is babitt. Many others use a steel or iron plate, some bronze or sintered, either welded, screwed, or riveted to the hub.

Boxes got something like bearing bronze horseshoes fastened to the box side. Many years ago I saw the steamers at Stone Mountain (being shoved round by diesels) with horseshoes cut out of Nylatron (sintered nylon sort of sheet material) just shoved into the gap from above. I don't know how it was retained, maybe duct tape? How it would endure in service is anybody's guess.

I figure until somebody else works out the kinks of new plastic material retrofits on their dollar I will stick with the traditional.
