I'm hoping someone can answer this for me. The question relates to the production capacity of Pullman-Standard in the production of a standard boxcar in 1942. I am heading the restoration of Atlantic Coast Line RR Class O-25 boxcar No. 21271. The road number is confirmed. I know the car was part of order 3321, lot 5687. I also know that car 21011 was completed on 1/19/42. If 21011 was completed on the 19th of January, is it possible that the Bessemer, AL plant could have turned out #21271 (260 cars later) before the end of the month, or would it be more likely have been completed in February? As a preliminary estimate, if you assume cars after 21011 were under construction on the 19th, it would take a production rate of about 20 cars per day to reach #21271 on the 31st of January. How realistic is that? Not to mention the fact that the USA had just entered WWII. Thanks for your input. |

Car no. 100,000 was built in December 1951. That works out to about 650 cars per month, on average. http://southern.railfan.net/ties/1970/70-9/car.html JAC |
