I was highly dismayed when I made a visit to the D&H Colonie shops in Watervliet a few weeks ago to find them totally gone! I had done some photography there last year and was hoping to follow up on those visits to shoot some more of the yard. I was hoping to get some suggestions on other places in the Greater Albany area to do some more shooting of abandon train sites. Last year Bob Yarger mentioned a site south of Albany somewhere, but I don't have that info any longer. Your "ruins" photos (of all subjects) are very impressive and brooding. The other collection of equipment just south of Albany (also owned by the Mohawk & Hudson Chapter, NRHS) is at the Glenmont Power Station utility plant along Route 144. I understand the equipment has been moved a bit further from the road recently, and I suspect you would need special permission to get into the fenced facility to see it. Probably contacting the M&H Chapter (which has a website) would be the best place to start. |

Thanks for the link to the historical information on the Colonie shops, fascinating history, its a real shame that those buildings are gone now, even in their abandon state they still captured the scale of the operations that happened there. I would really have liked to visit when the roundhouse was still standing. Thanks Bob for the information about the M&H site, I will look into that. Any idea what the date is of the photograph Finderskeepers posted? Thanks Shaun |

I don't know the date of the Colonie photo, but would suspect the 1920s. The roundhouse did not last too long into the diesel era, I'm told, and was probably gone by the mid-1950s. The last steam ran on the D&H in 1953 and the remaining engines were dispatched to scrap soon after, not being kept for reserve use. The shops might have been saved had persons spoken up for them some years ago, but by the time they were razed it was too late. What was left was essentially a diesel facility, still owned by Guilford, not CP. The best surviving D&H shop facility is the small roundhouse at Rouses Point, NY, which remains in good condition, in private ownership. It would be a good final resting place for some of the equipment stored precariously at Colonie and Glenmont. Bob Do you know if it is possible to visit the Roundhouse at Rouses Point that you mention? Or know of any photographs of it. I would be interested in visiting and photographing it if it still has its original character intact. |

these arent Albany, but relatively close by. (within 3 hours drive from Albany) Manchester, NY roundhouse. (LV) its days are numbured, get there soon if you want to see it! http://www.frontiernet.net/~scottychaos/LVRRmanchester.html and the tiny PRR Roundhouse in Sodus Point, NY. this roundhouse's future is more secure, it is used for storage by the marina who owns the land. (ask for permission at the Marina office to go and photograph the roundhouse) http://www.frontiernet.net/~scottychaos/PRRsodus.html there is also a small LV roundhouse still standing in Auburn, NY. and a fabulous large Lackawanna roundhouse in the East Binghamton yard..but unfortunately that one is not accessable..that yard is basically off-limits to railfans.
