A while back there was some discussion here about the old Carroll Park & Western steam tourist railroad that operated during the 1960's and early 1970's near Bloomsburg, PA.
For many years some of the former CP&W equipment--Vulcan 0-4-0 #117, a combine, and a coach--has sat forlorn in a lot along Route 9 in Bayville, NJ. Happily the owner of this equipment recently donated the items to the Pine Creek Railroad located in New Jersey's Allaire State Park.
The old CP&W was built to 4 foot gauge since that was the gauge of their 0-4-0 #117, an ex-Jeddo-Highlands Coal Company 0-4-0T (rebuilt by the CP&W as a tender engine). The Pine Creek's operating equipment (and loop of track) is 3 foot gauge, so the #117 will be display piece.
There is already thought to refurbishing the combine and coach and converting them to 3-foot gauge for use. These two cars were built by the CP&W.
The CP&W had a real open-platform wooden coach--a former Newfoundland Ry. 42-inch gauge car converted by the CP&W to 4-foot gauge. When the CP&W closed this car went to the Pine Creek Railroad and is still there awaiting eventual restoration (it will join Pine Creek's own ex-Newfoundland coach already in service). So all these years later, these pieces of "early US tourist railroad history" are being reunited.
BTW, two other pieces of former CP&W equipment found new homes long ago. The CP&W's Climax locomotive (ex-Elk River Coal & Lumber #3) is at the Roaring Camp & Big Trees RR in Felton, CA (and from what I hear is now in the process of getting a new boiler to be returned to operation). The CP&W caboose (an ex-PRR 4-wheel wooden cabin car) is at Red Caboose Motel in Strasburg, PA.
Regards,
Jim Robinson
|

Just visited Old CP&W site and I fear it will be gone soon. Station, Deadwood Flats and water Tower are still up but in very poor condition. Area appears to be under commercial development, as they have raised & filled in parking lot /field to right of station and built a computer store
crabgras@sunlink.net |
