While doing research on my book about Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company's Railroad history, I ran across an article in a Company magazine that said Newport News cast over 250 of these for ALCO-Richmond Works. It said that they were large and hard to cast.

Exactly what are they and where are they located on a steam engine?
