GI Consolidations stored at Birchwood, Alaska in 1957. No. 556, on the right, survives in an Anchorage park. Some of these engines reportedly went to Spain in 1958. However, I always thought Spain's railways were either broad or meter gauge. Did Spain have a standard gauge line, and on which line did they work? Do any ex-Alaska locomotives survive there?

Also, this photo of Alaska 601, a 2-6-0 previously used on the Panama RR, regauged from five foot to standard.

There was a small amount of SG in Spain, I'll dig out what I can from my books when I get home (unfortunately I've drawn xmas duty at work!). Going from dodgy memory I think these lines where in the north of Spain.

The Cia Del Ferrocarril de Langreo en Asturias (FCL) bought the following locomotives from Alaska in 1958:

2-8-0's Lima 7875-7 and 7879-80 of 1942, Baldwin 69637, 69854, 70364, 70478-9 of 1943-4.

2-8-2 Baldwin 59605-5/1926, 60689/1928

4-6-2 Baldwin 63515/1941

The 2-8-0's retained their original numbers and remained servicable until at least March 1968. All later scrapped. I have no details for the 2-8-2's or 4-6-2.

The locomotives were supplied through the International Office of Co-operation for American Aid Mission to Spain and arrived at Musel on 25-2-1958 aboard the SS Belbetty.
