Not sure if it is the Super or not, but a classy train at Albuquerque, NM on the Santa Fe. Unlike today's UP, the Santa Fe used to PAY Lionel to paint their trains like this and they were top sellers and good advertising both. Wasn't one of the buildings in AQ destroyed by fire some years ago? Was it the depot or the Alvarado Hotel? http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?n ... _Fe_45.jpg |

As I understand it, Lionel needed a partner to front some of the ca$h for the F-3 tooling, and ATSF joined them. ATSF was running a fleet of stainless steel trains and the publicity of the Lionel model going nationwide was worth every dime. Remember, back then Lionel had huge market saturation with a layout in every department store. As to the other post, the station in ABQ burned down. I don't know about the hotel. AMTK 3-4 still pause there in daylight with time to walk around, just as ATSF 17-18 did back then. |
