Station Agent Troy Humphries uses a message fork to hand up orders to the engineer

On January 21, 1955, O. Winston Link drove his Buick convertible to Waynesboro, Virginia to photograph Norfolk and Western Railway's Train No. 2, Class K2a steam locomotive, making a stop on its way to New York City from Roanoke.

This photo began Link's five-year project of documenting the last days of steam on the Norfolk and Western Railway through more than 2,400 images of cities and rural communities, railroad employees, and steam locomotives.
