We're making great progress on restoring our UP Consolidation (2-8-0) 428, a 1900 Burnham loco. All of the boiler work is done, parts are going back on, and once the running gear is done we'll have another operating loco.
But--we never got the whistle. Anyone know the specs for UP freight and passenger whistles? From the photos, it looks like a step-top, but I can't tell if it's 5 or 6 chimes, the lengths of the longest/shortest chambers, etc.
Any info from all the UP fans out there would be appreciated. Thanks!
Kevinmccabe@avenew.com |

You might check this sight all about steam whistles. This guy has some very interesting information on the subject of steam whistles in general, and may be able to help you.
Good Steaming,
Hugh Odom
The Ultimate Steam Page
http://www.trainweb.org/tusp/ Voice of the Iron Horse whodom@awod.com |

Thanks, I'm familiar with that site and had already left a similar request on that discussion board.
Kevinmccabe@avenew.com |

Kevin: There are a number of other UP 2-8-0's in this same series preserved; many in parks. Is there any chance that you could get a whistle off one of those (if any still have the whistle) and then fabricate a "dummy" for the locomotive on display? Just a thought but if successful, you'd have the genuine article!
midlandblb@cs.com |
