On the Richmond Rails Yahoo group (requires joining), several photos of the fairly recent move of Chesapeake & Ohio 2-8-4 in Richmond, Virginia (by truck, how else?): http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ri ... yahoo.com/ And while you're there, the infamous Church Hill Tunnel in Richmond, which reportedly still has a 4-4-0, train and several bodies trapped inside: http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ri ... %26.view=t |

Bob, there is a book that has the story of the Church Hill Tunnel in it called "Scalded to Death by the Steam". I saw it many years ago when a friend of mine was working for CSX out of Richmond. It was a very interesting read, and an awesome view of the city from the south portal area of the hill. I got a kick out of it at least, as there aren't many things like that here in Michigan. Of course, we DO have the St. Clair River, er Tellier Tunnel here in Port Huron, but that's a different story! I would recommend to anybody for a good read: "Scalded to Death by the Steam". Sorry, I don't remember the author or publisher though. Wishing all the best for 2005, Dave Jandron |

The author was Katie Letcher Lyle. I think it was published about 15 years ago. You might try ordering it through your local library. The subject of the book was train wrecks that had folk songs written about them. |

The Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch published a special section on the collapse of the Church Hill Tunnel around 2000 with photographs. Those articles (sans photos) can be located in the T-D archives and are available for purchase. I think there may have been a couple earlier articles in which a T-D reporter and a photographer entered a portion of the tunnel and reported their findings with pictures. Don't know if they have a printed version available for purchase. |
