I'm curious about the information stamped into the side of the driver tires on the steam locomotive I'm working on. Aside from an obvious date (6-25-41), there is a letter "S" with a ship's anchor on both sides. Does anyone have an idea as to the origin/owner of this mark? Thanks for your help.
Brian T. What about Standard Steel Co. At one time belonged to the Baldwin Locomotive Works.
lvrr@enter.net |

If you look at page 109 of the book "The Locomotives that Baldwin Built" by Fred Westing you will see that mark. Most steel mills used a mark at one time. I worked for Bethlehem Steel and they used an "I" for a I beam.
lvrr@enter.net |
