Does anyone have a recommended source for extra-long 15/16" bridge reamers, for mud ring rivet holes? Our boilermaker prefers a bridge reamer as follows:
- Tapered end: same as standard bridge reamer: 3" to 4" long
- Full-15/16"-diameter: at least 7" long (9" preferred)
- Shank: MT3
- Material: HSS

I investigated getting these custom-made by a manufacturer who makes standard-length bridge reamers. Standard-length off-the-shelf 15/16" bridge reamers are $25 to $35 each. One firm quoted about $175 each for 3 pcs, $150 each for 5 pcs, $130 each for 10 pcs. This is probably not unreasonable for semi-custom work, but I'm hoping someone has a more reasonably-priced source.

Reason: We are replacing the lower approx. 2' of S.P. 2472's firebox side sheets, which have corrosion damage from unprotected outdoor storage 1957-1976 before restoration began. (This area is technically still within spec, but it's a bit close to the spec, so we're replacing the steel while we're doing the CFR230 work anyway...) Therefore the mud ring rivets have to be replaced. Rivet grip length is 6.5".

Thanks!

At the Strasburg, we use Tivoly, located in Vermont. Our contact is Paul Wheeler. Phone # 1-802-873-3106, ext. 6028. They are very good to work with. They also will make any kind of tap that you may need as well. Several years ago, they made us some 42" crown bolt taps.
