Very nice site here documenting one of our long-gone local lines. The Saratoga & Schuylerville (pronounced Skylerville) consisted of branchline trackage spun off by the Boston & Maine in 1945, running east out of Saratoga, NY (but with no connection to the Delaware & Hudson). Like many other 1950s shortlines in the Northeast, it was operated by the Pinsly family. It never did well and was abandoned in 1956. Little remains as evidence today, but the former enginehouse in Saratoga exists as a beverage warehouse and the depot in Schuylerville remains as a business. The big mill it served in Victory Mills still lies abandoned. Lots of good photos here, including the B&M era. Well worth a look. Also, check out the rest of the site for good stuff on other NY State shortlines and trolley routes. http://ginosrailpage.com/SANDS/index.html |
