Pioneer boxcab diesel. Caption says at EMD in LaGrange in 1950. Is that correct, or was this actually one of the 1980s celebrations?

No. 5300 at Baltimore. Not sure when taken, but it looks pretty good in this photo.

Hello Bob

I'd wager that was from an EMD open house. I have that postcard in my collection and another of the same unit (I believe) at the Museum of Transportation in St Louis.

The B&O shot and the Valley RR shot are also postcards from around the same era. Love that little priarie class engine. Would be nice to see the 103 restored, even of as a dsiplay engine, if RMNE ever moves it to their museum site. Since the engine was a southern logger by breed, would be neat to have it restored displaying its signifigance as an early New England tourist engine, either in its Valley RR or Middletown & Orange livery.

That picture was definitely early 70's. The 5300 was cosmetically restored in 1968, and C&O 490 pictured behind the 5300 came to the museum in 1971.

I remember visiting the museum during the 1973 gas crisis. Someone had spray painted on the tender, "When diesel hits $5.00 a gallon, I shall return." While I abhor vandalism, I have to admit to getting a good laugh out of it at the time.
