I have been told that Philadelphia area Wawa Corporation wants to demo the North Pemberton Railroad Station to make way for a mega store/gas station. I did a quick google search and did not find any news other than a thread on railfan.net. Is there any recent news out there? |

Isn't this town near Fort Dix? I saw the station last year-thought what a neat little piece of history..no obvious TLC but no obvious destruction going on... It would be sad if it were demolished.. We either seem to be building Wal-Marts to bring in Chinese trinkets or mini-marts to bring in Arab Oil... |

Pemberton is on the south side of Fort Dix. I spoke with a volunteer at the museum and did some web research. The museum's web site is at http://www.pemberton-twp.com/North_Pemberton_Station.html I am not a member of the museum and do not speak for them, but I do live near-by. WaWa is not attempting to directly destroy the station. WaWa wants the former Trilco property on the north side of the right of way, directly across from the station. This land was railroad property in the past. I think it was owned by the Hightstown and Pemberton, which interchanged with the PRR at Pemberton. The museum would like to expand onto this property. Some of the Trilco buildings would be demolished and others retained by the museum, inlcuding one for use as a restoration shop. Railroad buildings would be recreated in their original locations as close as possible to their appearence circa 1900. In some cases the replica buildings would be on the original foundations. It's not clear to me why WaWa wants this particular property. There is a lot of undeveloped land near-by. A location on Rt 38 or on the Pemberton By-Pass would probably have more customers. The museum is owned by Pemberton Township, which would like to purchase the Trilco property for the museum. The purchase would be paid for 75% by a New Jersey Green Acres grant and 25% by Burlington County. There will be a Pemberton Township Zoning Board meeting, February 23, at 7:00 pm, in the Township Municipal building, 500 Browns Mills Rd. Anyone wishing to support the museum should attend. |
