After years of neglect, Guelph city council finally decided that 6167 was becoming an eyesore, and that its asbestos which is showing in several locations needs to be dealt with. Therefore $250,000 was allocated in the 2006-2007 capital budget to deal with the upkeep of the engine. It is expected that the asbestos abatement will cost $100,000 and the balance of the money will go towards repainting, replacing missing parts and cab restoration. 6167 has sat in the same spot since 1967 and was well maintained by inmates of the local correctional institution until the early 1990's, but for whatever reason those visits stopped, and more recently that correctional facility closed its doors. Here is the interesting part though..The city's park director Jay Kivell has said interested parties have been making offers on the engine in the event the city wanted to wash its hands of the engine, "They are willing to pay for the engine and to transport it to the United States and restore it to operating condition, something that could cost $3 million"
