I know one round end Budd Car from this train made it to the RR of Pennsylvania. Did any other equipment survive ? I recall perhaps a year or so ago, seeing a photo of another one of these cars ( round end ) leaving Canada on a flat car ? How many cars made up this Philadelphia - Jersey City train ? I know it ran with round end cars at each end, however was their only one train set ? Did this train have all coaches ? and if so, does any other equipment from this order survive ? Food service cars, etc ? And, what is the condition of the interior of the car at the RR Museum of PA ? thanks for the information on this unique train ! |

The Starlight dinner train on BC Rail had an ex-Crusader obs car. It was completely modified inside for dinner train service. When that train folded I think it went to Ontario Northland with some other equipment. Chris. |

The Budd Crusader train was 5 cars. Account lack of a wye at Philadelphia, and a short turn-around in Jersey City, the train was double-ended and was, in order, obs, coach, cafe-diner, coach, obs. Obs cars were all-coach with a smoking lounge at the obs end, and coaches had essentially the same layout. Cars were numbered obs: 1, 5; coaches, 2, 4; cafe-diner, 3. Steam engines 117 and 118 were streamlined for the train and the tenders had the fluted sides extended to fair into the front obs car. FP-7's 900 - 905 took over the train in 1951 and only they could pull it account EP brakes on the train. [906-907 did not have EP brakestands] One obs car is at RRMPA and another went into dinner train service. The diner on Broad St. in Philadelphia is 1927 steel car 1186, the Iron Horse Ramble diner. |
