The horn thieves have been busy again, this time at the Smiths Falls Railway Museum in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Sometime between Sunday 06 February and Wednesday, 09 February, the Leslie "snowplow whistle" 3 chime air horn was stolen from Canadian Pacific S-3 number 6591.

This horn is in somewhat faded CPR maroon, although if it appears for sale it could be most any colour of fresh paint.

If anybody hears word or rumors that somebody has a horn matching this description please contact the Museum at (613) 283-5696 email : sfrmchin@superaje.com . You may also contact me directly at s.c.hunter@sympatico.ca or Stephen.Hunter@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca .

As well, if anybody can lead us to a replacement, please contact me!

Thanks, everyone,

Steve Hunter,
Trustee, SFRM

I recommend that everyone ingrave their name on many places on the horns - and take photos.

Also, weld them down.

Excellent advice, Jim.

Don't do as we did, knowing this was a task we needed to get done but always being too busy to do it!

You can bet that when we recover the old horn or buy a replacement, we'll be following your advice to the letter!

With these creeps skulking around stealing from museums, any locomotive that lives outside must be protected in this manner, and it sure won't hurt even if your engines are "safely" locked indoors.

From a Canadian friend of mine, via an online newsletter:

<It's an Airchime J-3 Snowplow Whistle - stamped so right on the No.1 Bell.>

Hopefully it'll turn up somewhere, intact, and returnable.

Hi,

Good news to report on CP 6591's stolen horn.

Following extensive publicity and before charges could be laid against the (identified) thief, 6591's horn magically appeared two days ago, tucked into a snowbank beside the museum's gate.

Sadly, the rare "Snowplow Whistle" lettering has been ground off the #1 bell, and the horn is sporting a fresh coat of black paint, but at least it's home.

Needless to say, the horn will be mounted VERY securely and a certain unprincipled trucker will be watched very closely for a very long time.
