Feb. 1911 the local paper reported that the railroads were about to announce that the drawings were complete and construction would soon begin on the Wichita Union Station, at a cost of $1,500,000.00. Feb. 18, 2005 bids were taken on the second major rail project to elevate the mainline tracks of the BNSF and UP north of Union Station. The project will have grade separation at 5 major intersections with new bridges being built covering a distance of 2 miles through the center of the city. The estimated cost of this project 94 years later is $65 million and will require 39 months to build while maintaining train traffic. This project will also impact the local train museum but it will be in a positive manner. They will be uprooted for about 2 mos while a major rework of their track takes place. The museum will receive all new track with new ties and switches and will gain about 600 feet of new track for display of equipment that was not possible with the current layout. |
