I was reading with interest the posts below about the new water tank gauge. I was talking to our Shay mechanic the other day and he tells me that in addition to a "sprinkler" gauge that we'll also have an electronic readout in the cab, hooked up to a device mounted to the bottom of the tank that measures water level by "weighing" the water. Apparently this is some power plant technology; don't know all the details but as I learn them, I'll pass 'em along. Sounds interesting to have 21st century technology on an old bucket of bolts.
I don't know jim, sounds like you're trying to kill a flea with a sledge hammer. Remember the KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid! I think the best idea we've kicked around here at TVRM meshes with Chattanooga's downtown Aquarium. We're going to install plexiglass "windows" in the side of the tank and then put some fish in the tender. We've been wanting to do a similar thing with our two RDC's as well. You know, a "mobile" aquarium. Maybe we could bring one of them to TRAIN/ARM next year....
Aw, if you really want to keep it simple, then borrow the Shedd Aquarium's car at the Monticello (Illinois) Railroad Museum. Don't know if they'll let it go easy--they might carp about it.
(yeh, I know, puns give me a haddock too).
